Special order 12-26: Use of Lapel Cameras

DEPARTMENT SPECIAL ORDER 12-26
TO: ALL PERSONAL
SUBJECT: USE OF LAPEL CAMERAS

Effective immediately, all sworn department personnel will record each and every contact with a citizen during their shift that is the result of a dispatched call for service, arrest warrant, search warrant or tarffic stop. The recordings will be saved for no less than 120 days. Personnel will refer to the instructional video on PowerDMS for storing instructions. Failure to record a contact under the listed specifications may result in discipline.

Only incidinets which fall under guidelines specified in General Orders SOP section 1-39 will be tagged into evidence.

It is the responsibility of the officer to ensure their personal video recorder is in working condition and properly charged at the beginning of the shift. Charging the camera througout the shift via the MDT is recommended. If the camera needs to be replaced, the Watch Lieutenant will be responsible for issuing the officer another camera. If another camera is nto available, a tape or digital recorder may be used. Officers will not utilize an audio recorder if a personal video camera is available.
